How to remove metadata from your files

Metadata is hidden data travelling inside a file: who created it, with which software, when, at which company or, for photos, where they were taken. This tool removes it in your browser without touching the visible content.

  1. Drag one or more files, or a whole folder with its subfolders.

  2. Check the list and choose what is removed: PDFs, photos, Office documents and comment authors.

  3. Press Remove metadata: a single file downloads with the same name; several come in a ZIP with the same folders, plus a CSV report.

Frequently asked questions

In PDFs, the title, author, subject, keywords, software, dates, XMP packets and the private data some programs store. In photos, EXIF (camera, dates and GPS), XMP, IPTC, comments and PNG text. In Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OpenDocument, the document properties, company, template, custom properties and thumbnail.

No. Only the hidden data in the file is removed. A name written in the text, in a header or inside a photo stays there. The authors of comments and tracked changes are replaced with «Author» if you leave that option ticked, but the text of the comments is not changed.

No. Photos are not recompressed: the metadata blocks are removed and the image data is copied as is. By default the orientation is kept, so they do not appear rotated, and so is the colour profile.

A digitally signed PDF is skipped, because cleaning it makes the signature invalid; you can still clean it by ticking the option. PDFs with an open password are skipped. Those with only usage restrictions are cleaned, but the result no longer has them.

Each cleaned file is read again to check that none of the chosen data is left. The results table shows what was found and removed in each file, and you can download it as a CSV report.

JapalTools scans metadata blocks for generative AI signatures and provenance claims: C2PA Content Credentials (JPEG APP11 markers and PNG caBX chunks), prompts and workflow parameters from Stable Diffusion, ComfyUI and Automatic1111, as well as tags from Midjourney, DALL-E, Adobe Firefly, ChatGPT, Sora and Suno. During processing, it completely strips these blocks without altering visual quality or file content.

Yes. For MP4 and MOV videos, the tool inspects ISO-BMFF boxes (such as udta, meta, and uuid), resets creation timestamps, and replaces metadata atoms with neutral free padding atoms, preserving frame offsets without re-encoding. In MKV/WebM it neutralizes EBML Tags, and in MP3/WAV it removes ID3, APE, and RIFF INFO chunks. The file downloads instantly with 100% original quality.

Each file is analysed in your browser when you add it, without uploading it. First, the metadata is searched for the marks generators leave: the IPTC tag that declares AI-generated content, C2PA Content Credentials and the program that signs them, Stable Diffusion, ComfyUI and other parameters, and the names of tools such as ChatGPT, DALL·E, Midjourney, Firefly, Gemini, Sora or Suno. Then the text of documents (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OpenDocument, PDF, text and HTML) is read and searched for chatbot leftovers, citation marks and style traits typical of the models. Each sign adds or subtracts, and you see the verdict, the probability, its reliability percentage and the reasons. It is an estimate, not proof: marks can be removed and text detectors make mistakes.

No. The document is processed in your own browser and is not sent to JapalTools or anyone else. When you close the page, no copy remains outside your device.
