    How to compress

Compressing a video takes time: roughly as long as it lasts, depending on your device. Very long videos need quite a lot of memory.

    How to compress a video

The video is re-encoded inside your browser with the system’s own codecs (WebCodecs): first it is read, then a new one is created with less data per second and, if you want, a lower resolution or frame rate. There is no upload and no queue.

    1. Select or drag one or more videos.

    2. Choose by quality or by final size (for example, 16 MB) and, if you like, the maximum resolution. You will see the approximate size next to each level.

    3. Press Compress video and download the result (several videos come in a ZIP).

    Frequently asked questions

No. It is compressed by your browser on your device, so it also works with private videos and doesn’t depend on your connection.

Choose “By final size” and press 16 MB. The quality is calculated so the video doesn’t go over that size; if it is very long, the resolution is lowered too (unless you chose one) so the picture doesn’t fall apart.

MP4 with H.264 is the one every phone, computer and social network opens. WebM with VP9 is usually a little smaller at the same quality, but not every program opens it.

Every frame has to be decoded and encoded again. It usually takes about as long as the video lasts, less on computers with hardware acceleration. You can cancel at any time.

No. The document is processed in your own browser and is not sent to JapalTools or anyone else. When you close the page, no copy remains outside your device.
