How to read a QR code or barcode

The code is read inside your browser: with the reader built into the browser if it has one and, if not, with the ZXing library in WebAssembly. Neither the camera image nor your photos are sent anywhere.

    1. Press Scan with the camera and allow access, or choose, drag or paste a photo or screenshot with the code.

    2. Point at the code until it is outlined in green. In an image, all the codes are searched for at once and each one is numbered.

    3. In the list, copy the content, open the link if it is a website, save the contact or export everything to CSV.

    Frequently asked questions

QR codes (also Micro QR and rMQR), Data Matrix, PDF417 and Aztec, and the barcodes EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF, Codabar and DataBar. For EAN and UPC the check digit is verified and, if it is a book, the ISBN is shown.

The browser asks for permission the first time: if you refused, allow it again from the padlock in the address bar. It also fails if another application is using the camera. If nothing works, take a photo of the code and choose it: the result is the same.

A QR code can lead to a fake website. That is why the link never opens by itself: you will see the full address and it only opens if you press “Open link”, and only if it starts with http:// or https://. Check that the domain is the one you expect before pressing or typing in your details.

It interprets them and shows their data separately: the network name and password of a Wi-Fi code (so you can copy it), the details of a contact (vCard or MECARD, which you can download as .vcf), and the address, subject or number of emails, phone numbers and SMS. A website cannot connect you to a Wi-Fi network: you will need to paste the password into your device settings.

The list only exists while the page is open. If you tick “Keep the list in this browser”, it is stored in your browser’s local storage (never on a server) and deleted when you untick the box or press “Clear the list”. You can also export it to CSV to open it in Excel.

Yes. In a photo or screenshot all the codes are searched for and outlined on the image with their number. With the camera, turn on “Continuous scanning” to read one code after another without stopping it, for example to take stock.

No. The document is processed in your own browser and is not sent to JapalTools or anyone else. When you close the page, no copy remains outside your device.
